Four Marjon BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy students have received a national 鈥楪iving Voice鈥� award from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy in recognition of their voluntary work in raising awareness of speech and language needs within the wider community.
Hannah Burton, Grace Chugg, Hannah Greer and Marianne Johns received their national award at a glittering ceremony in Glasgow in September. The awards were launched in 2010 to raise awareness of the needs of those with speech, language and communication needs and to demonstrate how speech and language therapists can make a vital, often life-changing difference to individuals.
The award winning Marjon 鈥楪iving Voice鈥� team ran a series of events including a Speech and Language Therapy Information day in 91视频, and a Dysphagia Awareness Day, designed to raise awareness of swallowing impairments. They also supported local schools in the national Voice Box joke-telling competition, helping children build confidence in their communication skills and reminding people that some children need specialist help to speak or to understand what is being said to them.
Grace Chugg from the Marjon Giving Voice team told us: 鈥淲e鈥檙e incredibly honoured to be recognised at a national level for our contribution to raising awareness of Speech and Language Therapy and would like to thank our Marjon lecturers and our fellow students for their huge contributions. We wouldn鈥檛 have done it without them鈥�.
Dr Lynsey Parrott, senior SLT lecturer, said: "We are delighted that our students have been recognised for their hard work. They have really excelled themselves and put into practice what they have been studying to make a difference in our community. We are incredible proud of them all".
Marjon has been training Speech and Language Therapists since 1994 and is the only place in the South West accredited to train students. Academics are known for their pioneering work, such as Gillie Stoneham for her research into helping transgender people find their voice.
